Four Traits of Jannati

Asalaam Wa Alykum Wa Rahmat Allah Hi Wa Barakat

I know you want paradise more than anything else. And I also know you wanna know if you will ever be able to end up in paradise (inshallah). However, we can only confirm if Paradise is for us or hell after our death. But this mail might give you a vague idea on where you stand between paradise and hell. This article focuses on the characteristics of the people of paradise. See which of these amazing characteristics you have and that which you do not poses can always be strived for inshallah.

Allah says in Surah Al-Imran in Ayah 133 (interpretation of the meaning):

And march forth in the way (which leads to) forgiveness from your Lord, and for Paradise as wide as are the heavens and the earth, prepared for Al-Muttaqun –the Righteous

From this Ayah we find out that Jannah is prepared for the Righteous slaves. So who are these people? Well worry not ‘cause Allah tells us in the next two ayahs.

These people have 4 characteristics as outlined in Ayah 134 and 135 of the same Surah:

Characteristic #1: They spend when it is easy and when it is difficult.

·         Money is something that we all love. But the righteous spend some of it in sadaqa both in times of need and in difficulty

·         When you have money, it is very easy to spend. If you take a glass of water from an ocean, does it make a difference? No. The real test comes when you have very little but yet you still spend.

·         Just remember that Allah has promised us, that when you spend in charity, that money is NOT lost.

Characteristic #2: Those who swallow their anger

·         Anger comes from shaytaan and is the cause of many evil or unrighteous actions

·         Reported by Ahmad, the Prophet SAW said (translation of the hadith): “The strong man is not the one who can wrestle another to the ground; the strong man is the one who can control himself when he is angry”

·         So the people of Jannah suppress it immediately and completely. Meaning even if they do not say anything, you still cannot see any sign of it on their face. And these people do it over and over again.

Characteristics #3:
Those who lovingly forgive others

·         We are all greedy to some extend. We all want to do what is good for us but at times our actions may hurt those who we love. For example:

·         There was a blind girl who loved only her fiancé because he was always there for her. She said that if she could only see the world, she would marry her fiancé. One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to the blind girl and then she could see everything. Her fiancé asked her, “now that you can see the world, will you marry me?” The girl was shocked when she saw that her fiancé is blind too and refused to marry him. Her fiancé walked away in tears, and later wrote a letter to the girl saying “just take care of my eyes dear”.

·         So as you can see, at some time in our life, we are going to hurt someone and be hurt by others. But the right thing to do is sit a side our egos and forgive those who oppress us.

·         Obviously there are different levels of forgiveness but the people of Jannah forgives and forgets. Meaning they do not mention it to the person ever again

Characteristic #4:
Those who commit a shameless act but remember Allah immediately.

·         No one here is free of sins. People who enter Jannah, they have also committed sins. The only difference is that they turn to Allah immediately.

·         This of course is hard because when you disappoint someone, you naturally avoid any contact with that person. If you work with kids, you see that even little babies will not look at you when you get mad at them.

·         So of course Shaytan takes full advantage by using this against us saying that how could you turn to Allah being impure? But we should always turn to Allah because the one who covers our sins is ONLY Allah and the people of Jannah immediately turn to Him.

·         But at the same time remember that Allah does not forgive the cycle of tawbah. Meaning you can’t repent with the intention that you would do it again. Make your intentions sincere and then if you somehow do get indulged in that same sin again, repent right away!

·         Thus we learn that the people of Jannah commit sins but it is what they do after the sin that puts them in Jannah. A classic story is that of Adam (A.S) and Shaytaan which is so common that I donot feel the need to elaborate on it and make this article longer.

To recap, the people of Jannah have the following characteristics:
1. They spend in time of easy and difficulty

2. They completely swallow their anger

3. They lovingly forgive others

4. They immediately turn to Allah when they commit a shameless act

May Allah make us of such people.
